” Let go. Why do you cling to pain? There is nothing you can do about the wrongs of yesterday. It is not yours to judge. Why hold on to the very thing which keeps you from hope and love?” — Leo Buscaglia

Natural Hair:: Quick tips and Hair Styles for Transitioners

Heeey Ladies  🙂 !!

I sometimes feel like a natural hair ambassador… always trying to convince relaxed lovelies to come to the other side and join the natural life. 🙂 I rarely have time in the conversation to explain to them just what it is to transition, how to do it, nor where to begin. sooooo, here is my attempt to show anyone who is on the fence just how simple the process can be.

What does it mean to transition?

Transition means growing your hair out of its relaxed state without cutting it.

How to start the Transition Process. If you relaxed your hair 6 weeks ago or 6 days ago, you can start the process now. Just let this relaxer be your last. Transitioning can be a bit frustrating because of the difference in textures. The process can be a lot simpler if you figure out the best products and hairstyles that suit you. The most important part of transitioning is PATIENCE, yes, patience. 🙂 I’ve added a few tips here that have worked for many who took this route to their journey to natural hair.

5 Quick Transition tips:

1) Set a hair goal. ( length, health)

2) Get to know your hair and its needs.

3) Keep your hair moisturized, especially where the relaxed hair meets your natural hair.

4) Avoid direct heat ( flat irons, pressing combs, etc)

5) Rock cute  hair styles { See below}

Some ladies, including myself, opt to do a Big Chop instead of growing the hair out. This is simply, cutting all of the relaxed hair off , even if it is down to an inch. Big Chops sounds like an easy thing to do but believe me, It can be a shock to your  system. I never had such short hair and didn’t know what to expect.

Whichever option you choose, enjoy the journey.

If you have any questions, as always, Send me a message! 🙂  – Kristi

Petite Celebrity:: Nia Long Graces the cover of Ebony Magazine

Nia Long, 5’2”,   bares it all in the November issue of Ebony magazine.  The beautiful, pregnant actress posed nude for the cover and gives readers an inside look into her pregnancy journal as she prepares for the latest chapter in her life. For the first time, she opens up about reconnecting with her West Indies family and how she and her partner, NBA player Ime Udoka are adjusting to the new changes in their lives.

In the issue, 40-year-old Nia speaks about her views on having children and getting married past a certain age. Here is a little snip- it from the interview.

“The medical profession tries to tell every woman, ‘Have your babies before 40…’ Society says, ‘Get married before 30…’ I think we just take our time as women, and do what comes natural to us and for us, we would make fewer mistakes.”

By the way, as a mom, I think being pregnant is such a beautiful time in a woman’s life so kudos to her for baring it all. If the cover wasn’t your thing, check out the alternate. 🙂

Daily Kiss:: Awaken the Stillness Within

In the midst of movement and chaos, keep stillness inside of you. -~- Deepak Chopra

It’s a bias of our culture that stillness is regarded as lazy, as being stuck in inaction, as a negative.

It’s not. It’s an action, and a powerful one.

What’s more, it can change your day, and in doing so change your life.

You’re in the middle of a frazzled day, swamped by work and meetings and emails and interruptions, or hassled by kids and phone calls and errands and chores.

You pause. Stay still for a minute, and breathe. You close your eyes, and find a stillness within yourself. This stillness spreads to the rest of your body, and to your mind. It calms you, centers you, focuses you on what you’re doing right now, not on all you have to do and all that has happened.

The stillness becomes a transformative action.

Stillness can be a powerful answer to the noise of others. It can be a way to push back against the buzz of the world, to take control. It can remind you of what’s important.

How to Practice
Stillness, oddly, doesn’t come naturally to many people. So practice.

1. Start your day in stillness. Whether it’s sitting with a cup of coffee as the world awakes, or sitting on a pillow and focusing on your breath, stillness is a powerful way to start your day. It sets the tone for things to come. Even 5-10 minutes is great.

2. Take regular stillness breaks. Every hour, set an alarm on your computer or phone to go off. Think of it as a bell that rings, reminding you to be still for a minute. During this minute, focus first on your breathing, to bring yourself into the present. Let the worries of the world around you melt away — all that is left is your breath. And then let your focus expand beyond your breath to your other senses, one at a time.

3. When chaos roars, pause. In the middle of a crisis or a noisy day, stop. Be still. Take a deep breath, and focus on that breath coming in, and going out. Find your inner stillness and then let your next action come from that stillness. Focus on that next action only.

Let stillness become your most powerful action. It could change your life.

My  Stillness  Journey:: I was watching Oprah Sunday evening as she discussed some of her own life lessons with Facebook CEO and a small audience. She answered several questions and chatted it up about her journey. For whatever reason, when she spoke about stillness and finding that quiet time with yourself and God, the hairs on my arms stood at attention and I really listened. She explained that until you shut things around you down and get quiet that you will never really hear the voice of God and hear those little whispers that guide us. I took away a lot from that show and immediately started thinking of ways to begin a journey to add stillness into my life. I set aside quiet time on my calendar for 10 minutes twice a day. I’ve not heard the AHHHHHH HAAAAA’s yet but the peace that comes from it, the peace that makes it easier to deal with things that normally would distract me from my goals, they aren’t as loud.

As fate would have it, I was skimming through blogs last evening and stumbled upon the post you just read by Leo Babauta. Isn’t it amazing how God puts things in front of us to continue us in the right way? Do you take time to be still? If not, will you?

“Through return to simple living comes control of desires. In control of desires Stillness is attained. In stillness the world is restored.” ~ Lao Tzu

When you don’t know what to do, get still. The answer will come. ~ Oprah

Starting today, take some time to be still. It’s  part of the journey. Enjoy it! ~ Kristi

Daily Kiss:: You are ready.

You are Ready for Excellence

Today is a day for you to begin creating a joyous, fulfilling life.

Today is the day to begin to release all your limitations.

Today is the day for you to learn the secrets of life. You can do it.

You can change your life for the better.

You already have the tools within you to do so. These tools are your thoughts and your beliefs.

Don’t waste your thoughts on blame. No person, place, or thing has any control over your feelings because they don’t think in your mind.

This is also why you really have no control over others—you see, you can’t control their thoughts. No one can control another unless that person gives permission. So you want to be aware of this powerful mind you have. You can take total control over your own thinking. It’s the only thing you’ll ever have total control of. What you choose to think is what you’ll get in life. I’ve chosen to think thoughts of joy and appreciation, and you can, too.

We can learn to think only about all the good in the world. We can lift our thoughts up. We can greet each day with a smile. We can let the world know that we’re happy to be alive. We can express gratitude at every turn. We can love our bodies. We can be our best friends.  ~ Louise Hay
